First Retreat for the BBfP Follow-up Program
The BBfP follow up program kicked off in Denver, CO, where 10 participants and 2 leaders in training (LIT’s) met for their first retreat. Over three days, the group worked on relationship building, communication skills, leadership development and building a U.S. home group community.
On the first night of the retreat, participants and LIT’s gathered for a Community Potluck dinner. Everyone had a wonderful time reconnecting as they shared summer memories while enjoying a night of yummy food!
On the second day of the retreat, the hard work continued from the summer. The day started off with breakfast and an interactive Peace Pole activity led by LIT’s to energize and engage everyone. The first program of the day, “Building a Community”, asked everyone to define “community” as it means to them and to the U.S. Home Group. Everyone worked on creating a collage of their home communities, which they presented. This activity spurred a lot of discussion between participants and allowed everyone to offer their personal views, opinions, and ideas in a safe space.
After lunch, the LITs led the participants in a tower-building activity which encouraged communication and collaboration. The group shifted to addressing “Conflict in Community”. The group started by defining key communication techniques they learned during the summer intensive. Next, they split into dyads and were given scenarios to act out/role play in front of the group. To end a great day, the group met up for ice cream!
The last day was spent reflecting on what all the participants hoped to get out of the program, and what each participant was going to contribute to his/her communities during the follow-up program. The participants’ Individual Project curriculum was the main focus of this program block.
The retreat was a rejuvenating energizer for the group! Everyone left inspired and ready to continue to work in our home communities to be the change that we want to see in the world.
