CONFRONTING PRIVILEGE IN DENVER

Building Bridges for Peace participants and Leaders in Training (LITs) gathered in Denver to Confront Privilege. The highlight of the weekend was a youth panel with local and diverse students, leaders and activists all with unique experiences and concerns about the notions of privilege, inequality and activism. Matt provided an articulate theory of objective and subjective privilege and expressed his own self-awareness in his work with PHAMAL (Physical Handicapped Amateur Musical Actors League). Adriana, a Metro State student in Political Science, engaged us with the story of her uncle who traveled through the Arizona desert in order to come to the United States. Twins Sarah and Abdullah described their long journey to the United States from Iraq and offered their perspective on youth and violence. Finally, Kim, a young Native American mother recounted her personal struggles in school and anger with the status quo. In the afternoon, Ali White, an LIT, facilitated an acrylic and charcoal self-portrait process that involved considering our privilege as what we are able to do and give in pursuit of justice and equality. After chili and warm sopapillas at Tosh’s Hacienda, we were swept away by the spirit of Cleo Parker Robinson and her ensemble’s world premier of “Breakin’ the Rules” a piece choreographed to tell the fraught history of Five Points in Denver and the powerfully inspiring story of the potential that comes from challenging convention.

On Sunday, the BBfP community celebrated the follow-up year completion with Chuck and Robyn Jacobs and Cathy of the Foundation for Compassionate Action. Although the year is drawing to a close, the tangible outcomes of the participant and LIT Individual Projects and the meaning of their personal reflections was certainly present during the weekend. They look forward to staying involved with SCG and challenged themselves to be in true community with one another.
