The 3rd Annual Circles of Change Awards Breakfast
Reserve your tickets now!
November 14, 2008

Join SCG on Friday, Nov. 14th from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. to honor four peace and community activists at the 3rd Annual "Circles of Change Awards Breakfast" --
Denver’s Flobots Founders Among Honorees

Teaching African children to read, strengthening women’s human rights globally, and encouraging social responsibility among American music fans are three peace-promoting ideals embodied by the individuals being honored at Seeking Common Ground’s “Circles of Change” breakfast, Friday, November 14 from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the Four Points by Sheraton, Denver Southeast at I-25 and Hampden.

Believing that those who read bloom, Yohannes Gebregeorgis co-founded Ethiopia Reads in 1998 to foster literacy in Ethiopian children. A former political refuge from Ethiopia, Mr. Gebregeorgis spent 11 years in San Francisco as a librarian before returning to his native country with a dream to open libraries there to lift children from poverty and improve their lives through reading. In May 2008, CNN named Gebregeorgis a “Hero of the Week,” recognizing his work to bring positive global change by empowering children through education. Yohannes is also a recipient of the 2008 Presidential Citation for International Innovation from the American Library Association, one of the first to receive this honor in its inaugural year.

Terry Greenblatt has dedicated her professional life to furthering the human rights of women across the world, and is renowned for bringing women into the Mideast peace process to ensure an equal voice for both Israeli and Arab women. Currently, she heads Boulder-based Urgent Action Fund for Women's Human Rights (UAF), a global women’s fund that protects, strengthens and sustains defenders of women’s human rights. In a professional career spanning more than 20 years, Ms. Greenblatt has served a wide number of women’s rights and philanthropic action organizations, including a high-profile position as the executive director of Bat Shalom, a prominent women’s peace organization in Israel. She was a Nobel Peace Prize Nominee with 1000 Women for Peace and Ms. Magazine named her “Woman of the Year,” along with Palestinian colleague, Maha Abu-Dayyeh Shammas.

Denver natives Stephen Brackett and Jamie Laurie, founding members of the rising star hip-hop band The Flobots, are being honored for using their increasing fame to encourage a whole new generation of socially active individuals. The two, along with fellow band members, founded the non-profit Flobots.org to establish music programs at the Denver Children’s Home and to hold music workshops at schools and community organizations. They have since expanded the organization’s mission by creating “Street Team,” a way of inviting music fans to become engaged in community organizations. In the coming months, Flobots’ Street Teams all over the country will launch aggressive voter registration drives, among other civic-minded pursuits.

“Inspiring peace, hope and social action is the spirit behind our annual breakfast, and past attendees have told us repeatedly how moved they’ve been by the honorees’ fascinating stories and remarkable efforts,” said Melodye Feldman, SCG executive director. “We look forward to again presenting four extraordinary individuals who we believe will energize all in the room to make their own contributions to positive change in the world.”

9News anchor and reporter Bazi Kanani will emcee the morning program.

Tickets for the breakfast are $85 per person, and student tickets are $30 each; the fair market value of each ticket is $25. Last year’s breakfast raised close to $50,000 for SCG youth leadership and peace building programs. Proceeds from this year’s ticket sales will help further these efforts.
