Badlands P.E.A.C.E.

Badlands P.E.A.C.E. (Participant Encounter and Community Engagement) was one of SCG’s international peace education programs developed in affiliation with Badlands National Park and supported by the Badlands Friends Group.  The program provided the space for Native American and non-Native high school students from the greater Badlands region of South Dakota – including the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and Rapid City -- to meet, learn about one another, and acquire communication, leadership, and peacebuilding skills.  The program’s goals were to build community, impart concrete communication and leadership skills, increase cross-cultural competency and awareness of global issues, cultivate empathy and understanding, and develop self-esteem and self-efficacy to enable participants to effect positive change.

Badlands P.E.A.C.E. consisted of a one-week summer intensive and a yearlong follow-up program of meet-ups, residential retreats, group service projects, and an International Encounter Trip. Badlands P.E.A.C.E. stands at the intersection of global learning and local action; participants learned about a region in conflict and experienced an International Encounter Trip while applying what they learned in order to improve their home communities.
